My Musical Culture
Hi everyone! My name is Anabella Walker, and I'm a freshman Music Therapy major. My primary instrument is the piano, and I've been playing since I was about nine. I also love playing guitar and a tiny bit of ukulele. I'm excited to be at Converse studying music and Music Therapy.
The song that I chose that has had specific meaning to me for a while is the song When We Were Young by Adele. The meaning that this song has for me is growing up and looking back on the past/childhood. I started listening to this song a lot last year, during my senior year of high school and this year I had started to learn to play it on piano for fun since it's such a pretty song. It is kind of a sad song, but I find myself returning to it a lot.
An artist that I've found myself turning to during this pandemic, really since the beginning when it first started, is Billie Eilish. I've really enjoyed listening to Billie Eilish this past year and I love her music. I think Spotify said that my most listened to song of the year was Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish, so I'll share that one. One of my favorite things about Billie Eilish is the softness of her voice, and she also has very specific aesthetics to the songs that she writes.
There isn't a whole lot of music that I don't like; I enjoy a lot of different genres. I guess if I had to share an example of music I don't connect with, it would be Soap by Melanie Martinez. Some of her other songs are pretty good, but that's one that I just don't vibe with.
I also really started listening to Billie Eilish during quarantine. I listened to her before the pandemic of course, but I started listening to her a lot more and really focused on her lyrics and sound production, and she is very talented. She does have a very specific type of aesthetic to her voice, and I really love it.
ReplyDeleteAdele is a great artist. I also love to listen to her when I'm doing some self reflecting. It's really beautiful you've found so many artist to connect with!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Anabella and completely understand where you are coming from. Artists that I do not necessarily connect with, it's harder for me to get into them and their music. Through taking this course, I hope to broaden my musical horizons.
ReplyDeleteI love the softness of Billie's voice as well! She's perfect to listen to when you need a good cry and we all know this past year was full of them. Ocean Eyes is an OG on my feels playlist.
ReplyDelete"When We Were Young" is absolutely one of my favorite songs. I can see why it would be a song that you revisit. A lot of times, people think that they need a happy song to get them through tough times. When in reality they just need permission to let go of all the emotions they've been holding on to - Adele gives us that permission with "When We Were Young." I agree with your observation of Billie's voice. I've heard a lot of people say that she can't actually sing, and that's when I show them "Ocean Eyes." Amazing selections, Annabelle!
